It has been reported that Tyler Perry is closer to acquiring BET. According to Streamr, he is set to take control of Black Entertainment Television and VH1, once owned by Paramount. There has not been any mention of the undisclosed amount of Perry’s deal.
Perry is no stranger to BET. He partnered with them through Tyler Perry Studios to created BET+, a streaming service that features a host of original films and series, along with the BET programming library. This successfully helped to boost the subscribers and the revenue considerably, for the network.
BET’s launch with creator Bob Johnson at the helm in 1980 opened the door to content for minorities, not only being showcased on the network, but also bringing in a considerable amount of advertising dollars, proving that our dollars count!
We look forward to sharing more details as the expected transition takes place. This is quite the win for Tyler Perry and the community. It is nice to see BET one step closer to being in the hands of someone who has clearly made a point of creating a vehicle and a voice for minorities. That is initially how it all started with Black Entertainment Television.
